Welcome to Sussex Guitar Lessons. Learning the Guitar is a life long journey full of wonder, challenges and fun! Taking guitar lessons from a local guitar teacher will save you years and get you playing well quickly. Teaching yourself guitar online is one thing, but having an experienced player as your personal guitar coach cannot be beaten. I have been playing for 40 years and have a wealth of playing and technical experience I can share with you. I specialize in teaching guitar to beginners, but am equally happy to work with more experienced guitarists on certain areas of their playing. My forte is neo classical 'shred' lead guitar, however I am accomplished in many styles. From the very basics of how to tune and set up your guitar, the first basic chords, your first song, through to more complex riffs, bends, trills, arpeggios, sweep picking, alternate speed picking, String tapping, string skipping techniques I can coach you along the amazing journey that is playing the Guitar. My studio is filled with Guitars by top names such as Fender, Ibanez, Takamine, Washburn, Aria, Charvel Jackson, and recording equipment by Roland , Reaper, Line 6 Joe Meek, Marshall, TC Electronics.
Each student is different, so I aim to work with you to help you achieve your aims, that may be a child wanting to learn a simple nursery rhyme, or writing and recording your own song, we will agree how best to work together on your guitar skills. I taught myself the hard way; alone, no lessons and it took me 40 years. I know now that a good guitar coach would have developed my playing to this level in 5 years. I can tailor make courses of individual guitar lessons or group guitar lessons, help you understand the technology of modern musical equipment, and even show you how to record your own song by yourself, or with musicians across the globe from your laptop.

From Beginner level
Although most beginner students are youngsters it's never too late to learn. We'll start with the absolute basics, and gradually apply them. Now is not the time to get bogged down in Music theory, let's get you playing something and having fun first. It's important to maintain enthuisasm and see some progress I feel.
We will also look at things like Guitar anatomy, how to string your guitar, how to tune your guitar, what guitar equipment you need, how to hold a guitar, finger exercises for guitar etc. These guitar fundamentals are very important for both Electric guitar and Acoustic guitar players, how can you practice if you cant tune your guitar properly? Let's keep it simple and fun to start with, pick an easy tune and we'll learn it together!
We'll learn the very basic chords to start with like C A (Am) G E (Emin) D (Dm) and how to move between them and strum in time. Then look at some basic scales.
Beginner Lessons
This is where learning guitar gets to be real fun! There are a lot of mediocre rock guitar players out there, to lift yourself above the rest you need to learn some advanced guitar playing techniques and get comfortable with them. Picking styles, exercises to build speed accuracy and articulation on the guitar neck, Scales, Sweep picking, Arpegios, trills, hammer ons, pull offs, string tapping, slides, string bending, pinch harmonics, are all cool techniques worth mastering. Alone it's easy to learn all the wrong things and waste years practicing things the wrong way. At this level it's not just about practice, it's about perfect practice. Yes there are pain barriers, yes it's hard work, yes it's worth it!
